What to Wear to
an Indian Wedding

Whether you've been to dozens of South Asian weddings or this is your first, Sari Palace can help you find the right outfit — and make sure you feel confident showing up in it. We're in Berkeley, and we've been doing this since 1986.

First Time at an Indian Wedding?

Don't Stress.
We've Got You

If you've never been to a South Asian wedding before, the question of what to wear can feel genuinely overwhelming. What's appropriate? What's too casual? What's too formal? Do you need to match a colour scheme? Is Western clothing okay?

You don't need to figure this out on your own. When you come into Sari Palace, we'll talk through the event — the type of ceremony, the setting, the time of day, the community — and help you put together a look that feels right. You won't leave guessing.

We help customers who are brand new to South Asian fashion all the time. You don't need to already know the terminology, the sizing, or what a lehenga versus an Anarkali looks like. Just come in and tell us what you're going to.

Event by Event

What to Wear
to Each Occasion

Mehndi

The mehndi is typically the most casual and colourful of the wedding events — and often the most fun. Guests usually dress in bright, festive colours. Salwar suits, Anarkalis, light lehengas, and sharara sets all work well. Avoid white and traditionally bridal colours out of respect for the bride.

Sangeet

The sangeet is a celebration with music and dancing, so comfort matters. You want something that looks great but allows you to move. Think embellished salwar suits, festive indo-western pieces, or a saree if you're comfortable in one. Men can wear a well-fitted kurta — a simple kurta with trousers is appropriate and won't feel underdressed.

Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony is the most formal event and deserves a more elevated look. For women, a saree, a formal lehenga, or an Anarkali suit is all appropriate. For men, a sherwani or a formal kurta with churidar is standard. Avoid white and red as these are often reserved for the bride in different regional traditions.

Reception

Receptions vary — some are black-tie formal, others are more relaxed. A saree, a lehenga, or an elegant Anarkali are all reception-appropriate for women. Men can wear a sherwani or a more streamlined indo-western jacket and trousers combination. When in doubt, err toward more formal.

Pro Tip

If you have your wedding invitation, bring it with you when you come shopping.

The invitation often tells us a lot — the type of ceremony, the venue, the time of day, and sometimes even a dress code. All of that context helps us point you toward something that's genuinely appropriate for what you're attending, rather than just generally suitable for Indian weddings in the abstract.

Your Questions

Frequently
Asked

What should I wear to an Indian wedding?

It depends on the event, the community, and the dress code — but as a guest, you generally can't go wrong with a saree, a salwar suit, an Anarkali, or a lehenga for women, and a kurta or sherwani for men. Avoid white and, in many traditions, red (which is often the bride's colour). If you're unsure, come into Sari Palace and we'll talk through the specifics of what you're attending.

Where can I buy an Indian wedding guest outfit in the Bay Area?

Sari Palace in Berkeley is a well-established South Asian clothing boutique serving the Bay Area since 1986. We carry a wide range of wedding guest clothing for women and men — from sarees and lehengas to kurtas and sherwanis. We're at 1000 University Ave, Berkeley. You can book a visit in advance or walk in during our open hours.

What should I wear to a mehndi or sangeet?

Both events tend to be more casual and colourful than the ceremony. Bright, festive clothing is generally welcome — salwar suits, Anarkalis, and lighter lehengas are all appropriate choices. Men usually wear a kurta and trousers. Dancing is common at the sangeet, so think about comfort and ease of movement alongside how the outfit looks.

I've never been to an Indian wedding before. Can Sari Palace help me choose an outfit?

Absolutely — this is one of the things we do best. Tell us about the event and we'll walk you through everything: what's appropriate, what to expect, how different garments fit and feel, and how to put together a look that works for the occasion. You don't need to come in with any prior knowledge. Just come in.
